Alamo Recreation Center Teaching Garden

A former vacant lot, across from the Alamo Recreation Center, Alamo Community Garden was created on land owned by neighborhood resident J. E. Mosby in 1981. It was developed through the efforts of the Alamo Recreation Center, (the no longer existent) Greenspot Neighborhood Gardening Program, the City of Austin’s Senior Luncheon Program, Austin Community Gardens (which merged with Sustainable Food Center in 2001), and a few dedicated gardeners. The Alamo Garden began in spring of 1981 with Senior Citizens participating in The Senior Luncheon Program and was expanded in the spring of 1982 to include neighborhood residents. Later, the garden became an educational garden serving primarily youth. Alamo Community Garden is now a collectively run urban garden that exists to provide space to members of all ages to grow organic produce and to promote community.
