St. David’s Foundation Community Garden
About the Project
The St. David’s Foundation Community Garden is a project in development, adjacent to the new Sustainable Food Center site near MLK and Airport. The projected first planting is Spring 2013!
- Members of the community are working on a committee to prepare the land, figure out how the garden will function, and let more people in the community know about the opportunities to get involved.
- The community garden will be used, managed, and enjoyed by the folks who live in the surrounding neighborhoods.
- If you are a neighbor and would like to get involved, don’t worry if you don’t know how to garden! We will have trainings to learn more about how to grow healthy organic vegetables, and support each other in preparing and planting the land.
Background
Sustainable Food Center (SFC) cultivates a healthy community by strengthening the local food system and improving access to nutritious, affordable food. SFC envisions a food secure community where all children and adults grow, share, and prepare healthy, local food. From seed to table, SFC creates opportunities for individuals to make healthy food choices and to participate in a vibrant, local food system. Through organic food gardening, relationships with area farmers, interactive cooking classes and nutrition education, children and adults have increased access to locally grown food and are empowered to improve the long-term health of Central Texans and our environment.
Thanks to a generous donation of land from the Meredith of Meredith Family Investments, Sustainable Food Center is creating its headquarters, which will include a new program center and community and teaching gardens, at the new MLK Jr. MetroRail Station near E. MLK and Airport.
